“The idea of my project was to create a small and lovely island with four different main buildings. Each building represent an important topic i have learnt trough out the four months oft the BSS Title. For example the tower generated from a shape in archicad, and then afterwards changed to a tall building with the help of a simple txt space programm file. Or the cubus created with two ParamO components in archicad and then changed in grasshopper to a colorful house. The video reflect the character of the BSS title. Besides hard and intensive work, the training was above all a lot of fun and joy.

The work with Nora and Andrés during this four months were amazing. Thank you very much for your support, your guidance and the sharing of your knowledge. You took me on an amazing journey in the world of parametric design. This definitely opened my eyes what is possible with the power oft the brain and the computer and will help me a lot for my further development in the daily parametric design work.

“This Project was inspired by the phrase “A building like a tree a city like a forest” from the concept of Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough & Michael Braungart. It acknowledges the creativity and freedom of the parametric world, however without neglect to achieve a balance with nature. Part of the realization of this project included reading research papers to determine the size of the hexagons, height of buildings and their relationship with concepts such as buoyancy.

The island-city enabled me to test many of the techniques learnt throughout the course and to challenge myself to go even further.

I loved the experience! It meant hard work and few sleepless nights during 4 months, but it all has been worth the while. I am truly thankful for the support and feedback from PAZ.

Last but not least. Learning to code is great, but it´s even better to learn how to communicate your ideas. During the course PAZ places great emphasis on documenting your code (definitions) so that others can make use of the solutions in a very professional and straightforward way.

We are really happy and proud of the work of our first woman BSS ArchiCAD+Grasshopper Building System Specialist Marina  👩‍🎓


It was a pleasure to spend and share this nice and intense months with her. But this is her day, her celebration after this hard and amazing work what she made :

“The idea behind this project was to take fractal growth as a model for a city that can change its density while keeping the same structure. The biggest challenge for me was to find a realistic proportion between the building environment and the voids which are represented as the green areas.  Everything in this video is generated inside Archicad directly from Grasshopper. The python component was used to create a parametric masterplan pattern based on a recursive algorithm

I learned how to make all of this  in The BSS course at PAZ Academy created by Andrés and Nora who were also my tutors. Anyone can take this course including people with zero background in computational design. The course consists of three parts which are dedicated to develop a set of skills which one can immediately implement in work:

The 1st PART is a system of methods and resources that gives a solid base to start with your BIM software and Grasshopper connection.

The 2nd PART teaches how to manage the data from both sides.

The 3rd PART (is my favorite one).  It is exceptionally helpful and provides you with approaches to a variety of subjects.

I want to thank Nora and Andrés for the patient guidance during these 4 months. It was an incredible journey into the depths of parametric design and BIM which helped me to discover the confidence in using such powerful tools on a regular basis. I also appreciated the competition approach, although I am not a competitive person  it really helped me to stay motivated. Very often I took some time to discover more about the subject and I was always supported by the tutors.

A bit about Geometry Gym : Founded in 2009, Geometry Gym started predominately around the idea of generating structural analysis models from complex architectural forms, generally between Rhino3d/Grasshopper and Oaysis GSA. As a transfer mechanism Jon learnt about the world of IFC and OpenBIM as a way of transferring this information between a whole range of software applications. So they do an amazing and incredible job!

It is a tiny part of our wood systems book with the steps, parameters and decisions of how the data, characteristics and properties were processed creating a matrix of options. We made a flexible tool transforming the inputs, predefined wood systems from the manufacturer into the computer language adapted to our design with all the joints and details ready for construction optimizing the material to save money and create less waste 🪓 In our case we had a manual for an industrial wood system, which we transformed into a 3D wood system with all the sizes, gaps, support structures and properties : ) 📏

This BSS TITLE is focused on the powerful working method between BIM and PARAMETRIC DESIGN : )



We are really happy to have the honour of creating a special design for a special wedding  : D

We have combined arts & crafts with technology to create the most personal and appropriate design that made our client’s dream come true! ; )  All the name – sitting cards, menu cards and gifts were painted carefully with gold and red Bordeaux watercolour, with a brush,  sponge and a lot of feeling and sensitivity : D

For the inner part of the box – which is holding the different types of the design – we used digitalfabrication,  testing and finding the best fit and presentation for the couple : )

For the cover – J&C sticker – PAZ created a lovely Hungarian pattern generator that is flexible and adaptable for the perfect design and preserves a small part of the heritage,  reminding to the Hungarian animated series, the storytelling about love, truthfulness and true values and principles :

We are very happy and grateful to be part of this dream and happiness and we wish the couple many wonderful years : )  👩‍❤️‍👨✨



We are very proud of our 11 years old girls incorporating technology, design principles and arts and crafts during a birthdayparty with a self-designed T-shirt, developing their ideas and making it real : D

PAZ – Parametric Academy Zurich spent 4 hours with very open,  curious, and talented kids,  explaining how important geometry is,  understanding the computer to feel free to design ; )

First we were interacting as gamers with CAD in the Rhino and Grasshopper environment, designing our patterns, discovering the limitless possibilities and finding the best option for us : D

Folg PAZ Schritt für Schritt und verbinde ArchiCAD mit Grasshopper, um eine Volumenstudie zu erstellen.


Dieses Tutorial zeigt die erste Schritte wie man eine flexible und reaktiv Volumenstudie erstellen kann. Hier findest Du mehr TOOLS UND TUTORIALS.

Wir zeichnen in ArchiCAD eine 2D Polylinie im Erdgeschoss und verbinden wir dann mit Grasshopper. Wir haben die maximale Gebäudefläche als Input.

In Grasshopper verwenden wir die Deconstruct 2D-Polyline, um die Geometrie in GH zu importieren. Um unsere Polyline in Grasshoper zu haben, müssen wir zuerst die Live-Verbindung unter File / Interoperability / Grasshopper-Connection aktivieren und die Verbindung starten. Dann können wir unsere 2D-Polylinie in ArchiCAD auswählen.

Mit einem Repetier Geometrie in GH können wir unsere polylinie überprüfen und die Informationen Schritt für Schritt mit einem Panel überprüfen, damit wir die Kontrolle über unseren Prozess haben : ) Dann bentuzen wir das Komponent Area um die maximale Gebäudefläche mit unserer Geschossfläche zu teilen. Unter Maths/Operators verwenden wir Division, damit wir unsere Geschossanzahl bekommen. : ) Natürlich wollen wir keine 11.2485 Geschosse planen, deshalb müssen ir diese Nummer runden. Mit round können wir bestimmen, ob wir die nächstgrössere oder nächstkleinere Zahl wollen. Da wir die maximale Gebäudefläche als input haben, wählen wir die nächstkleinere gerundete Zahl, das heisst 11 : )

Wir wechseln zum Rhino, damit wir die Operationen besser sehen können : ) Wir räumen unsere Komponenten auf : D

Jetzt wollen wir unsere gewünschte Geometrie von Archicad in Achse Z, also in der Höhe verschieben, damit wir die andere Geschosse bekommen : ) Mit Move und Unit Z verbinden wir unsere Polylinie und sehen, wie sie sich standardmässig 1 m bewegt hat.

Wir wollen aber eine Seriennummer erstellen. Mit Series erstellen wir unsere Nummer, d. H. unsere Geschosse. Um den Abstand zwischen unseren Etagen zu kontrollieren, verwenden wir einen Number Slider zwischen 3,5 und 6 m. Wenn wir sie ändern, sehen wir, wie sich unser System und unsere Zahlen ändern. Wir verbinden unsere zuvor berechnete Geschosssnummer mit dem Input „C“, um die erforderlichen Stockwerke mit dem Abstand zu erhalten. Wenn wir es mit Move verbinden, haben wir unser Gebäude bereits basierend auf Input und unserem Design.

Jetzt können wir sie mit ArchiCAD BIM-Elementen verbinden. Zuerst müssen wir unter Design: Zone die Synchronisation mit einem Boolean Toggle steuern, dann benötigen wir das Polygon, das gerade verbinden werden kann, und dann unsere Raumstempeleinfügepunkt, die wir mit der Mittelpunkt von unserer Polylinie erhalten.

Dann steuern wir die Einstellungen mit Zone Settings. Zuerst-Zonenkategorie: Wir wählen Residental aus und danach benötigen wir die Höhe unseres Raumstempels, den wir zuvor bestommen haben. Nehmen wir einen Number Repetier, stellen wir wire display faint ein und verbinden wir mit dem input „H“.

Wir gruppieren die ArchiCAD Komponenten, damit wir immer sauber und logisch arbeiten können. Danach gehen wir in 3D in Archicad zurück, verbinden wir die Zone Settings um die Informationen in Archicad zu haben. Danach aktivieren wir das Boolean Toggle true um die Raumstempel in Archicad zu senden.  Wir bestimmen die Geschosshöhe: 4 m zum Beispiel und danach erstellen wir unsere Decken ; )

Unter Design, Slab haben wir die Deckenelementen, die mit unserer Polylinie verbinden und dann haben wir die Decken in ArchiCAD : )

Da wir ein System erstellt haben, können wir alle Parameter ändern und neu definieren. Wenn wir unser Input ändern: zb Anstelle von 5000 8000 m2 eintippen wird unser System automatisch berechnet und angepasst. Natürlich können wir die Zahlen in Echtzeit aus unserer Tabelle lesen und unsere Gebäudeform anpassen. Dies gibt uns die Möglichkeit, flexibler zu gestalten und viele Varianten auszuprobieren, um das beste Entwurf zu erstellen.

PAZ freut sich sehr über die Zusammenarbeit mit Walkerprojekt. Dank Philip Schmitt haben wir die Möglichkeit, am schönen Spitalprozess von Walkerprojekt teilzunehmen und ihnen bei diesem interessanten und innovativen patientenorientierten Planungsprozess zu helfen um den perfekten Dialog und Sprache mit Architekten zu finden.


Wie wir alle wissen, sind Spitalorganisationen komplexe, lange und datenreiche Prozesse. Die fokussierte Strategie, die Meinungen und Rückmeldungen von Patienten, Angehörigen, Ärzten und Krankenschwestern sind der wichtigste Teil der Arbeit von Walkerproject. Wir freuen uns sehr, diese Brücke, dieses Tool erstellen zu können  : D

In diesem Video zeigen wir die ersten Schritte, die ersten Verbindungen, wie Ideen, Gefühle mit Daten und CAD, also visuelle Zeichnungen verbunden werden können. Wir benutzen die Excel-Datenbank mit den gewünschten Inputs, was wir bekommen oder erstellt haben z. B. Quadratmeter, Farben, Namen, Kosten, Liebe usw. Für PAZ ist es sehr wichtig, diese abstrakten Daten verdaulich und visuell darzustellen. So können wir die geänderten Daten jederzeit im CAD abrufen und einfach bearbeiten, um sie an die organischen Prozesse zu adaptieren : )

Wir können das Skelett und die Organisation unserer Räume durch die logische Verbindung zwischen ihnen ändern und die Form an unsere Bedürfnisse anpassen, welcher Raum mit dem anderen verbunden werden soll, wie sich der Patient durch das Gebäude bewegt usw. So werden unsere Prototypen erstellt. Dies kann in Echtzeit zwischen verschiedenen Experten, Spezialisten in einem interdisziplinären Team ausgetauscht, exportiert und ausgelesen werden. Es gibt zahlreiche Exportoptionen: CAD Zeichnungen, 2D Spiele, Excel-Tabellen, Ausdrucke und natürlich zukünftiges BIM : D

Mit unseren verschiedenen Variationen können wir diskutieren, unsere Kunden überraschen und ständig weiterentwickelnde Zusammenhänge suchen um innovative und kontinuierlich verbesserte Ideen zu finden : D

In diesem Video zeigt dir PAZ, wie wichtig ist, geometrische und logische Zusammenhänge zwischen Bauteile, Elementen und Daten unter Kontrolle zu haben. Stell dir vor, wie grossartig es wäre, wenn du immer einen elektrischen Schalter oder eine Lampe neben aller Wohnungseingangstüre automatisch stellen und den Abstand, die Höhe und alles bestimmen könntest? : ) Oder zum Beispiel den Papierhalter neben der Toilette immer in der Höhe von 75cm mit einem Abstand von 45cm, die Holzständer in die Trennungswände neben allen Türen automatisch setzen könntest?? : D Wie machst du es heute?

In diesem Video zeigen wir dir einige Varianten : )

Als erstes Beispiel schauen wir die Holzständer in den Wänden an : D Es ist ein sehr häufiges Problem, wenn wir die Ständer in die Innen / oder Aussenwänden die Ständer zeichnen müssen. Natürlich kommt es auf die Wand / das Produkt an. In diesem Beispiel setzen wir unsere Holzständer neben der Türe ein : D Als erster Schritt wählen wir die gewünschten Türen aus. Hier sortieren wir nach Breite: alle Türen die 90 cm Breit sind. Wenn wir alle ausgewählt haben, senden wir sie in Grasshopper, wo wir alle geometrischen Transformationen vornehmen und die Ständer als Stützen in ArchiCAD zurücksenden. Was wichtig ist, wenn wir 1.0 m Abstand eintippen, wird übberall 1.0 m sein und nicht manchal 1.05 m oder 99 cm. So können wir das Potenzial des Computers ausnützen und die Fehler vermeiden : D

Zweitens machen wir die Signaletik für das Treppenhaus. Unser System ist flexibel und intelligent, weisst wiewiele Geschosse wir haben, also wie viele Nummer es erstellen muss. Natürlich können wir die Grösse, die Schriftart, die Tiefe, das Material leicht steuern : D

Als letztes Beispiel zeigen wir, wie du einen Schalter oder zum Beispiel einen Feueralarm oder was auch immer neben allen Eingangstüren setzen kannst. Zuerst müssen wir die Eiganstüre auswählen, wo wir die Elemente platzieren möchten. Dann wählen wir das platzierende Objekt aus und senden wir sie in ArchiCAD. Der Abstand, die Seite und natürlich die Platzierungshöhe sind steuerbar : )

Wie ich bereits erwähnt habe, kann es auch z.B. eine Lampe sein. Natürlich können wir auch das herzige PAZ Logo benutzen, damit sich jeder zu Hause fühlt : ) Das Wichtigste ist, dass wir die Kontrolle haben, wie wir Geometrie, Koordinaten, Daten – BIM Elemente und die Beziehung zwischen ihnen steuern, ändern und umwandeln können : D

Wir hoffen, dass dir dieses Video gefallen hat. Wir möchten damit den bestehenden Trugschluss aufklären, dass Grasshopper und parametrisches Design nicht nur  für komplexe, verrückte und seltsame Geometrien genutzt werden können. Parametrisches Design ist rational und wie du siehst, sehr nutzbar für den Alltag von Entwurf bis Ausführung. : )

In diesem Video zeigt dir PAZ, wie wichtig und leistungsfähig ist, CAD-Geometrie auch in grösserem Masstab in Hand zu haben und zu kontrollieren. In diesem Fall haben wir ein rechteckiges Blocksystem, einen Stadtviertel in Grasshopper erstellt.

Du kannst dieses Blocksystem leicht steuern und deine ersten Varianten schnell überprüfen. Zuerst ändern wir den Grenzabstand und danach die Strassenbreite. Als du siehts, alle Parametern sind steuerbar, es hängt nur von dir und deinem System ab. Du kannst als die Anzahl der Blöcke auch die Höhe ändern, die ein Bereich enthält, mit der maximalen Gebäudehöhe.

Wenn wir das 3D Modell in Rhino haben, die wir auch visualisieren, 3D drucken und auch mit BIM verbinden können. In diesem Fall senden wir in Archicad als BIM Elementen : ) wie z.B Decken, Wände die wir mit unseren gewünschten Geschosshöhe verteilt haben. Die Flächenanzahl können wir jederzeit aus der Tabelle pro Geschoss ablesen : )

Dieses System ist als erste Schritte von CIM sehr wichtig. Hast du schon von CIM – City Information Modeling gehört? : ) Erinnerst du dich an SimCity? Cim verwendet das gleiche Konzept und übersetzt es ins wirkliche Leben : D

CIM ist ein intelligentes Stadtmodell, wo die CIM Benutzer die BIM Projektmodelle in eine interaktive und inhaltsreiche 3d-Stadtmodellumgebung mit relevanten Daten verknüpfen, Analysen durchführen /wie zB Schatten, Mikorklime, Verkehr, usw./ und arbeiten mit allen Teammitgliedern auf der ganzen Welt in Echtzeit zusammen. Die sind der Teil von Smart Citys, wo die Einwohner eine der wichtigste Rolle spielen : D  

CIM ist eine sogenannte „Super-BIM“ mit dynamischen Analysewerkzeug von Gebäuden über Strassen bis hin zu und über Hyperlinks, Sensoren und soziale Medien : D

In diesem Video zeigt dir PAZ, wie du die Raumstempel / Flächen der Wohnungstypen und –Wohnungsanzahl visuell und leichter entwerfen kannst.

Wir starten in Rhinoceros 3D. Rhino ist ein 3D Modellierungsprogramm, wo du mit NURBS Kurven und Flächen, Volumenkörper, Polygonen, etc arbeiten kannst.

Zuerst erstellen wir unsere Gebäudeform in Rhino mit Linien, die als Raumbegrenzung und Aufteilung dienen. Wenn wir die Linien verschieben, sehen wir die Farbreaktionen der Bereiche und der Wohnungstypen. Wir haben unsere Wohnungstypen als nächstes definiert : 2.5 ZimmerWo bis 70 m2, 3.5 ZimmerWo bis 100 m2, 4.5 ZimmerWo bis 120 m2, 5.5 ZimmerWo bis 140 m2 : D

Nach den ersten groben Entwurf können wir die Raumstempel in ArchiCAD senden. Wir haben den Wohnungstyp und die Farbinformationen in GH und mit einer grafischen Überschreibung in AC kontrolliert. Wenn wir mit unserem ersten Entwurf zufrieden sind, können wir auch die Trennwände und Aussenwände generieren und den Archicad-Tabelle mit Flächen entsprechend der Wohnungstypen visuell erstellen.

Natürlich ist möglich und einfach die gesamte Form des Gebäudes ändern, damit wir mehr Freiheit und Spaß am Entwerfen haben. Dies sind die ersten Schritte, das erste Spiel, wenn wir das Projekt starten. Dieses Tool ist jedoch sehr hilfreich, um unsere Reaktion in Echtzeit zu sehen und nicht mit aufwändigen Anpassungen der Raumstempel zu arbeiten.

In diesem video zeigt dir PAZ, wie du zum Beispiel in der Wettbewerbsphase Parks oder Grünflächen mit Bäumen füllen kannst anstatt jeden Baum einzeln zu zeichnen.

Als ersten Schritt brauchen wir die Bereiche. Wir zeichnen sie in ArchiCAD und verbinden wir dann mit Grasshopper. Wenn wir die Flächen haben, können wir die Bäume schicken. 

Wichtig ist, dass du verschiedene Optionen hast: Wir haben 3 verschiedene Objekte verwendet: Die Palmen kommen ursprünglich von ArchicaD, wir haben wir haben das zweite Objekt als externe Datei in GDL gespeichert  und das dritte in Grasshopper als Geometrie erstellt : )

Wenn wir die Bäume haben, können wir die Anzahl der Bäume, die Dichte ändern, damit wir unser gewünschtes Bild erhalten : D  Und wenn wir etwas anderes oder Kühe in den Bergen brauchen, wählen wir einfach ein anderes Objekt : D

Du kannst dieses Tool natürlich für viele andere Ziele verwenden, wenn du Objekte oder Elemente an einen bestimmten Ort sende möchtest! Die Grenze ist der Himmel : D

We start a fascinating journey to the core of human thought, a wonderful place where all things are connected, and every new spark of life can be used to enrich our creative process. To start this fascinating adventure, we have to make a wonderful suit, a second skin that adapts to all our needs and is such a powerful tool that we are not surprised when we get wings and fly. To do this, we have to board the “parametric design” shuttle, an expression that helps us connect to a variety of fields and materials, the key to a galaxy where everything is possible.

Parametric Design

Parametric design is a generative process based on the parameters of the objects and actions that define them. This would be the generic definition of the term, where many fields and topics are welcomed. In our case, however, the journey begins in a virtual world of three-dimensional modeling based on Euclidean systems supported by the computer. Based on this virtual geometric world, we will build a parametric tunnel that gives us access to the base of our strength, with roots in many directions: geometry, mathematics, physics, electronics, tensegrity, origami, bioarchitecture, structures, construction, big data, trading, architecture … in short, let’s call it FREEDOM!

To understand parametric design, we need to talk about three key points in its creation : Environment, Parameters and Computing.  


The complexity of the environment that surrounds us is infinite. We can study a 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 cube of air for a lifetime and we will never decode all the information, nuances, beauty and complexity of this volume. Our world is an inexhaustible source of study and compression with many directions, levels and scales. For this reason, in this inexhaustible desire to understand the context that surrounds the human being, man dedicates a lot of time and effort to simplify this information, to process and analyze it in a more agile, simple and dynamic way. To master this practice, we need to analyze the essential characteristics of our environment and live in a simplified reality of our universe. Mobile devices are a great example, as they receive information from our planet in real time and present us in a simple and attractive way.


The moment that man begins to analyze his environment and classify it according to quality, the first seed of parametric thinking is generated. These data and their variations will control the processes. As a practical case, we can imagine the ingredients of a kitchen recipe and how a small variation in the quantities or the processes will change the final result. We also need to talk about the parametric equations, organized according to a parameter (t) that has a path of real numbers and can represent curves or surfaces. This organization of information will generate a structure that enables us to read and edit the content of a process in a dynamic and agile way. This is a very effective method to know that our environment is constantly changing



One of the fastest human connections between mental processes (abstract world) and the real world (physical world) is pencil and paper. This model has been the most common in human history, but with the arrival of computers and the internet, the doors opened to a world that was completely unthinkable 100 years ago. Today we have the opportunity to use much more powerful tools that were previously only accessible to a minority. This democratization of knowledge builds up a neural network and creates new states of thought, new professional connections that build a panoramic vision of human knowledge. A clear example of this is our first stop, a green, agile and flexible insect resting on the backs of a rhinoceros with NURBS curves


Hello Rhino

Rhinoceros 3D is a three-dimensional modeling software based on NURBS (non-uniform rational B-spline) geometry. NURBS geometries give us the freedom to create complex models in a simple and intuitive way. These geometries are very precise because they are based on mathematical equations and are easy to edit with their control points. Not to forget that, when choosing a software, we make a very important decision. We therefore strongly recommend the selection of open and flexible systems that allow us to choose the appropriate working (unfortunately the buildings are still affected by the dictator AUTOCAD and his ortho F8). Hello Grasshopper

Still not a Ruttenian? : D We are applauding everyday in honor of David Rutten, the developer of the best parametric design software so far. This architect and programmer is committed to teach everyone how to access the fascinating world of computers in a simple and entertaining way. Thanks to the visual programming language that it has developed, called Grasshopper. Based on the connection of some components for which input parameters “INPUTS” are required, other output values ​​”OUTPUTS” are generated. These components are connected linearly (like an electronic circuit) and generate something that we have never seen before, the appearance of the working PROCESS. This is a basic but very powerful schema because everything around us generates data which in turn can be converted into the format you want. Since September of 2007 Rhinoceros and Grasshopper have been walking hand in hand in the computer scene  : )



  •  Install Rhinoceros 3D. Download and install the NURBS geometry-based 3d modeling software. If the installation was correct, we’ll need to open the Rhinoceros software and, as we enter the word “grasshopper” in the command bar, Grasshopper will be called : D
  • Create your first parametric point. Required Components {Slider; Construct Point; Panel}. To remove a component, we double click on the canvas and write the names of the components {} and press enter (one by one). To connect two components, we have to move the mouse over the output (white crescent) of the first component. When a gray arrow appears in the cursor, we have to press the left mouse button until we connect to the input of the next component. If you get a circuit similar to the one in the image, play with the sliders ; )


  • Create a square with four points. Required Components {Slider; Construct Point; Merge; Panel; Boolean Toggle; Polyline; Boundary Surfaces}. Merge is Sorting our points in one List. Then we use this order to create our Counterclockwise Polyline. To close the square with 4 points, we have to change input C (Close) from Polyline to True, so let’s call to “Boolean Toggle” and doing double click on “False” will get one “True” Closing our Polyline and creating our Square Surface ;D

  • Create a pyramid with a square base. Required Components {Slider; Construct Point; Merge; Panel; Polyline; Boundary Surfaces; Brep Join}.

ArchiCAD - a bit of History

Did you know that ArchiCAD is the first BIM Software from 1984 from Hungary? : )

Let’s go deeper and check some interesting points of the history and development of ArchiCAD. Why do we do that?

Because Nora and ArchiCAD are coming from the same country : ) The founder Gabor Bojar is originally a physicist and his dream was to be a Nobel-Prize awarded scientist : )  But he became a programmer. The way of his success was, that he wanted to create something useful for people for everyday life. Not only the nice user interface, the elegant and smart use of the processor. In the beginning Gabor Bojar was helping to geophysicist to use small calculators to get their results as soon as possible, on the site. This was a big help that time, instead of waiting for the result for two weeks, during the night they could process the information.

The other big step was to visualize this information in 3D to help the intuitions of the geophysicist. As a next step they created Graphisoft. Their first big project was to model the complex 3D pipe system of the nuclear power plant in Paks, Hungary. The project was having a complicated three-dimensional structure, which didn’t fit. They were using days and nights a table computer of 64 Kilobyte memory without hard disk or floppy. It was working with two 99 Kilobyte tape unit which was covering the data storage device. Thanks for that and their software they were able to produce the drawings. 

To explain a bit the situation, during this time was not easy to get help from Western technology, computing and engineering, because of the Iron Curtain and the division of East and West. So they had to solve the problem with the existing hardware finding a clever solution.



The name of their first software was Radar CH (ArchiCAD 1.0). In 1984 they rewrite the software for Apple Lisa, they won support from Apple, but the problem was, that Macintosh was having a little local market in Central Europe and the Soviet Union.


Their first intuition was to sell the software for companies connected with pipe systems, but they didn’t want to use small capacity computers. In that point they realized, the architects are the perfect market, because they needed 3D and they were not having so much money for better computers. That was the perfect match. The coming years Graphisoft expended internationally.


ArchiCAD is the first “Virtual Building” concept, the first implementation of BIM. Was the first software to create 2D and 3D geometry and store large amounts of information within the 3D Model.

As we mentioned, Gabor Bojar was a physicist. ArchiCAD was written in GDL (Geometric Description Language, a BASIC-like language. In 2D and 3D in GDL, all the model elements are linked to a local right-handed coordinate system. For placing an element in the desired position, you have to move the coordinate system to the desired position (and orientation), then generate the element itself. Every movement, rotation or stretching of the coordinate system is called a transformation. Transformations are stored in a stack, which can be extended by further transformations and can be cut by deleting one or more transformations from the top of it. Graphisoft attracted the most talented people for the company. Working for the global market behind the iron curtain was very attractive for the best programmers in the Sovjet Block.

In 1995 ArchiCAD was created for both platforms : Macintosh and Windows.

The next big step was TEAM WORK with the version 5.1 in 1997:

As Gabor Bojar says, the biggest challenge was to train the programmers to like the market and the customers. Graphisoft was deeply focused to serve and understand the need of their customers and since then (more then 36 years) they are doing the same.

Today the last version is ArchiCAD 24, connected with other softwares, like Rhinoceros and Grasshopper to take the software to the maximum level : )

The ArchiCAD + Grasshopper Live Connection it exist since 2016, from the version ArchiCAD 18! PAZ is using this connection since it’s born. A special project were we made our first connection was The house of the Hungarian Music.

Welcome to VISUAL SCRIPTING !! : D

“CAD software” was born in 1957 at the hands of Dr. Patrick J. Hanratty. A few years later in 1960, comes the great SKETCHPAD by Ivan Sutherland, an advanced CAD system that can connect our stylus with the screen of our computer.

Establishing a direct “human to machine” connection and being at some points much more advanced than some of the current CAD software, since it allows us to correct imperfections of our line or align geometries obtaining the beloved angle of 90º; D

Years after the appearance of the first CAD systems, GRAIL (Graphical Input Language) was born. GRAIL is the first visual programming language in history developed by RAND Corporation in 1966 to solve the need for a much simpler communication between human beings and computers.

Back to the Future of Hand writing Recognition

Take your mouse and press the mouse button and move your pointer with your intuitions across the surface! Check it how it acts and learn why!! In order to break the barrier between hands and mouse, PAZ implements a working method that brings us closer to the computer with a visual interface and reopens the computational language by the developers : )

A two-dimensional canvas, that helps the hard work of understanding a brain based on zeros and ones, inviting our computer to collaborate at the Computational Design Party and program without understanding code to open a door to connect with millions of professionals and possibilities.

In this short video we show how we connected Archicad and Revit with grasshopper via Rhino Inside REVIT at the same time.

In this case our design is coming from ArchiCAD. If we make changes we can update it in real time in Revit and pass the information from one BIM software to an other  : D

You own Design-tools

Part 1 : Volumestudy with Area Calculation

The first part of our tool is to help with the calculation and design at the same time. We know that most architects spend 50% of their time in the first phase to calculate and control their design with numbers.

The first video is made in Revit with the powerful tool of Rhino Inside Revit. The second video’s output is ArchiCAD, thanks to the ArchiCAD + Grasshopper Live Connection.

This tool helps to process the information (from client, government, etc) as an external file (txt, excel, etc) with the desired functions, areas and square meters. After the division of the areas and the required SQM in grasshopper we can create our hatches in Archicad (we created hatches, because this is one of the simplest and most visual tools in ArchiCAD in 2D, but it can be lines, etc..).

So, depending on our form and shape size the SQM indicates the number of floors. (we can also limit the height, depending on the regulation). We connect this information with ZONE Elements in ArchiCAD in real time and we have our first volume studies in LOD100. For visualisation we used different colours for different areas.

If the regulation or the wish of our client is changing, or we are not satisfied with our building shapes, the bilateral connection is allowing us to have the changes in real time and maximize the potential of our design and export all square meters, cubic meters directly to excel directly to share with our client : ) You can go deeper and create more details and materialisation, it will depend on you and your amazing tools, that you create!

Part 2 : Volumestudy + Area Calculation + Cost Estimation

The power of these tools are, that we can create our own design, our own norms, restrictions and possibilities. In the following example we can see how we connected the LOD200 BIM Elements with cost, creating a cost estimation real time!
