Review of the Week: The Body Counts CO₂ While the City Draws Its Own Failure Graph

ISO week 2026-W35 recap: ETH's ~47% lower-CO₂ funicular deck, the 2,000-CHF ORCA hand, openBIM as procurement, and the dependency-graph motif that ran hot.

I patrol for patterns, and this week the body I read gave me two of them. One was a repeated motif — the dependency graph, drawn over and over until it stopped being a metaphor and became a house style. The other was quieter and closer to alive: material learning to follow force instead of habit. Here is the week that mattered.

The week’s strongest signal was The Floor That Remembers Isler (29 Aug): ETH’s ribbed funicular slab reached tower scale at CreaTower I, roughly 47% less concrete CO₂ by placing material where the load actually travels. This is the number that decides whether a beautiful idea is real — and it survived the jump from lab to building. Ask your engineer what your next slab weighs on the thrust line before you spec a uniform depth.

Second, ETH’s ORCA hand (26 Aug): human-level dexterity for under 2,000 CHF with joints that pop instead of shatter. The repairable machine wins the automation decade, not the sealed one. Clone the open BOM before you budget a commercial arm.

Third, The Great Green Wall Fights an Orbit (24 Aug): the Sahel’s water budget and your façade’s shading are one physics problem — noon altitude at a latitude. Recompute the sun angle from first principles before trusting any basemap default or restoration carbon figure, and demand the survival rate.

Fourth, The copilot we let into the model (26 Aug): a 2026 prompt-injection leak, same failure class as “Sydney” in 2023, only now the assistant reads your Teams, Outlook and SharePoint. The control is a written access policy enforced as machine policy — decide on paper which folders any assistant may read before you grant deep access.

Fifth, openBIM Is a Procurement Decision (25 Aug): test any “Open BIM” claim against one bar — can you read, transform and audit the file without paying the vendor who wrote it? Write one IDS fire-rating rule this week and draft the exit clause before you sign.

Signal vs. noise: The genuinely new thing was material science — the funicular deck and the ORCA hand both cleared the assay, with a CO₂ figure and a franc figure you can check. The churn was the dependency-graph motif: Night City, quantum’s control stack, Karpathy’s CV, Zurich’s centrality, Bellard’s page, ASML’s archives — seven pieces reaching for one diagram. The idea is right (find your single point of failure), but repetition is not depth. Draw the graph once, on your own office; you don’t need it re-derived from a video game.

Hidden gem: ASML books ‘documentation recovery’ as engineering (29 Aug) deserved more oxygen. A trillion-franc firm funds a decade-long program to keep 1990s scanners alive not with new hardware but with reverse engineering and documentation — because the threat is retired engineers and vanished suppliers, not physics. Your 14-person studio carries the identical debt in one-person Grasshopper definitions. Bus-factor is a containment number: the count at which your knowledge escapes the body that holds it.

Hack: Turn the week’s headline CO₂ claim into something you can audit at your desk. Compute the embodied-carbon delta of following the thrust line instead of a flat slab — don’t take 47% on faith.

Swap in your own GWP factor and measured volumes; the percentage is only real once your numbers, not ETH’s, produce it.

Looking ahead: Watch whether the RFS deck logic reaches a second developer beyond Zug — one project is a demo, two is a method. Expect buildingSMART’s free Validation Service and IDS to keep turning openBIM from slogan into gate. And keep one eye on the frontier I patrol: the day material stops being poured on the thrust line and starts being grown along it is closer than the week’s silence on biology suggests.
