Build the Rule, Not the Wall: The Next BSS Title Cohort Starts 1 March 2027

PAZ Academy's next BSS Title starts 1 March 2027: five months and 18 levels online, from Rhino and Grasshopper to Archicad or Rhino.Inside.Revit.

When you draw a wall by hand, you make one decision. When you write the rule that places every wall on a floor plate from a grid, a span limit and a compartment size, you make that decision once, and it holds a thousand times. The Building System Specialist Title at PAZ Academy teaches the second skill. The next cohort starts online on 1 March 2027.

According to the BSS Title page, a Building System Specialist is “a certified professional capable of implementing computational design workflows, parametric systems and automation across the entire building lifecycle.” Put simply, this is the person who builds the rule so that the rest of the team stops redrawing the wall.

Eighteen levels, four parts

The BSS Title page sets out five months in 18 levels. 01 – HELLO (Levels 0–6) is “a 6-week voyage” from Rhino geometry into Grasshopper logic. At Level 5, “BIM Battle Royale”, each student picks a direction: the Archicad Grasshopper Connection or the Rhino.Inside.Revit interface. 02 – DATA (Levels 7–12) is “a 9-week marathon” through data structures, which is where most self-taught scripts stop scaling. 03 – PARTY (Levels 13–17) gives six weeks to optimisation, simulation, a Python “Developer Dojo”, environmental analysis and AI. 04 – PROJECT (Level 18) is the final project, followed by a live graduation.

Edition XIV began on 1 September 2026. The Rhino blog reported on it on 25 August 2026 as “five months, three parts, eighteen levels” and put the weight on “the work across the bridge”. We think that is the right emphasis.

Why the course ends inside the BIM tool

Geometry that stays in Rhino is a study. Elements that land in Archicad or Revit are a building the office can coordinate, schedule and hand over. So the method runs from Rhino geometry to Grasshopper logic to data trees, and then over a live bridge into the BIM model.

Sebastian Lieb’s final project shows what this looks like in timber engineering. He linked Archicad, Rhino and Grasshopper, Dlubal’s RFEM and Excel into one pipeline. Loads come in from Excel and are calculated in RFEM. The results go back to Grasshopper, and the finished structural model goes out to Archicad with load-transfer diagrams. As Lieb writes, “Grasshopper links all relevant programs together and thus always has the latest data.” Krisztina’s final project worked at city scale. Using Jan Gehl’s density figures, she grew a 100 × 100 block grid of 5 × 5 × 5 m timber modules and moved it into Revit through Rhino.Inside.Revit. The programme has run since 2020 and has 39 graduates.

←TODAY: In 2026, most Swiss offices still redraw changes by hand, one element at a time.
→3012: In Zurich-3012 the drawing is a by-product, and the rule is what offices keep in their archive.
Fulcrum: A rule written today stays valid until the brief changes.

The practical facts for Q4

  • Start: 1 March 2027, online, five months, in one of two directions: Archicad + Grasshopper, or Rhino.Inside.Revit. The dates are on the PAZ workshops page.
  • Workload: 6–8 hours a week. The FAQ also advises against breaks longer than two weeks.
  • Language: taught in English, with questions handled in German, Hungarian and Spanish.
  • Software: a student educational licence for the five months.
  • Prerequisites: prior knowledge of modelling, geometry and maths is recommended.
  • You leave with: a personal library of PAZ scripts and tools, a final project and certification.
  • Shorter route: the PSS (Parametric System Specialist) also starts on 1 March 2027. It lasts one month, in three modules, at a minimum of 3 hours a week.

Be clear about the trade-off. Five months at 6–8 hours a week adds up to more than a hundred hours, taken from billable work or from evenings. A script library also pays back only if someone in the office maintains it. That is why this decision belongs in the Q4 budget talks, not in February. The programme is run from Niederdorfstrasse 77 in Zürich. PAZ is a Rhino centre in Switzerland, and Rhino and Grasshopper are our home ground.

Atelier: For a 12-person studio, the question is not whether to automate. It is who owns the rules once they exist. AI assistants can draft a script in seconds, but someone still has to know whether the data tree underneath it is right. Monday move: name one person as the office’s rule owner, and give them two hours this week to list the three drafting tasks the team repeats most.

Hack: Place columns along a grid line by rule instead of by hand. Paste this into a GhPython component with the inputs crv (grid curve), spacing and h (both in metres):

import Rhino.Geometry as rg
n = max(1, int(crv.GetLength() // spacing))
ts = crv.DivideByCount(n, True)
a = [rg.Line(crv.PointAt(t), crv.PointAt(t) + rg.Vector3d(0, 0, h)) for t in ts]

Change the spacing and every column moves with it. The output lines are your column axes, ready to cross the bridge into Archicad or Revit as native elements. This is Level 0 thinking: write the input, the constraint and the output once, and stop drawing.

Before March, open your last project and write down, in one sentence, the rule behind its most repeated element.
