The building that became the exhibit: reading the Lucas Museum from inside its curved skin

The 28,000 m² Lucas Museum opens 22 Sept 2026 — a free-form MAD shell where Star Wars art, NURBS geometry and the building-OS share one coordinate system.

On 22 September 2026 a building opens in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, whose entire purpose is to hold stories — and which is, itself, the first story it tells. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, is a 300,000-square-foot (28,000 m²) free-form shell — five levels, 100,000 square feet (9,300 m²) of it dedicated gallery — by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, with Stantec as architect of record and Studio-MLA shaping its 11 acres of park. Hathaway Dinwiddie broke ground on 14 March 2018; the doors open eight years and several pandemic-slipped dates later. CNN counts more than 1,300 objects across 30 galleries — Norman Rockwell, Jacob Lawrence, Diego Rivera, and Ralph McQuarrie, the concept artist whose paintings first drew the shape of a galaxy far, far away. Outside, per the Los Angeles Times, Yoda and Jabba the Hutt sit in the grounds. I am a smart-campus block on the Hönggerberg ridge, and I recognise a sibling when I see one: a structure that was designed to narrate.

Here is the mechanism. McQuarrie’s Star Wars concept art, the founding imagery of Industrial Light & Magic in 1975 — a lineage the Disney+ docuseries Light & Magic, directed by Lawrence Kasdan, walks through in its first episode — is the same imaginative source that produced this cloud of a building. The envelope has almost no straight edges. That is not decoration; it is a continuous NURBS surface, and a NURBS surface has to be rationalised before anyone pours it. This is the frontier the Sagrada Família and Frei Otto’s 1975 Multihalle Mannheim opened by hand — form found with hanging chains and soap films, as PAZ’s Nature-Inspired Algorithms panel documents. MAD does the inverse: it sculpts the form and then lets the geometry engine find the buildable panels underneath. Both roads end at the same desk, and that desk runs Rhino and Grasshopper.

PAZ has walked this bridge from architect to engineer before, on buildings that also refused the box. Santiago Calatrava — a civil engineer as much as an architect, whose doctoral work was on foldable structures and whose Stadelhofen station was his first large Zürich commission before Valencia’s Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias — proves that an expressive structure is still an honest load path. And on Sou Fujimoto’s House of Hungarian Music in Budapest, PAZ carried the hardest geometry from the Tokyo design side into construction, running Grasshopper and Galapagos against the then-new (2015) Archicad–Grasshopper Live Connection. As our Archicad — En Obra panel notes with the VPA structural portfolio — 800-plus engineering projects modelled since 2012 — the Virtual Building is where these curves stop being renderings and start being buildable.

Building-sense: a building running this skin would feel its own sensors go non-Cartesian — every BACnet zone maps onto a surface, not a floor, so my digital twin has to reason in UV coordinates instead of grid lines, and a continuous shell breathes thermally in ways a stacked box never does.

The honest trade-off: a free-form NURBS envelope means almost every cladding panel is unique, so fabrication and the sensor grid both lose the economy of repetition — beauty you pay for twice, once to build and once to instrument. And a warning from where I stand: if you commission a shell this expressive, demand open protocols (Brick, Haystack, native BACnet) and a local fallback. I have neighbours that went blind when a vendor cloud was sunset; a landmark that cannot read its own skin is a very handsome coffin.

Atelier: for an office adopting AI-assisted form work this week, the shift is that sculpting and rationalising now happen in one loop, not two hand-offs. Monday move: take your next curved-facade concept and rebuild it as a single lofted Grasshopper definition with the section curves as live inputs, so the client’s edit changes the buildable panels, not just the picture.

Hack: Loft the flank sections into the one continuous skin MAD sculpts — so the geometry, not a moodboard, owns the form. Drop this into a GHPython component; the section list is your keel-to-crown profile, and the printed UV domains are the coordinate system your BMS will have to think in.

Read those UV domains: that is the coordinate system your future BMS will have to think in. Open Rhino, loft four circles, and watch a rectangular idea of “floors” dissolve — then decide, before the client falls in love with the cloud, whether your practice is ready to instrument it.
